Location tips 2/ 3 sponsored by Jim Baldwin
Hot Tip: Please Release Me!

Congratulations! You've found the location, scouted it, and the client loves it. Now, BEFORE you invest any more money or time, is the moment to lock it in with a written agreement. Like Model Releases, Location Agreements, also known as Property Releases, outline the terms of the deal you are making with the location. It is your responsibility to protect yourself, your team, and the location by having a clear concise understanding of the dates and times, costs, and limits of liability involved in your project, as well as permission to use the images you are creating. Get this signed as early as possible.

Having a location release signed in advance reassures both your client and your location owner that you mean business, and legally commits your location to the project, reducing the chances of a last-minute bail-out by a fickle owner. It also gives you, with the proper language, the legal right to use the images you create of someone else's private property in perpetuity. Have your legal counsel review your boilerplate agreement, which should be written in plain language and include a mutual hold harmless clause. Protect yourself, and get it in writing!
